Harm van Marwijk, GP
Dr. van Marwijk is professor of primary care in the Institute of Population Health within the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences, University of Manchester, and practising general practitioner (GP). He wants to encourage, initiate, conduct, publish and implement excellent research to increase our understanding of health problems of older adults, and to stimulate better care and prevention and implementation. He combines research with GP clinical work and teaching.
Harm graduated in medicine in 1985 and started doing clinical research on mood problems in later life in 1987. He participated in the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) programme for leadership in general practice (1990-1995 ‘Late-life depression as seen in general practice’). After an EU fellowship at the Department of Primary Care in Southampton, UK, he moved to VU University Medical Centre in Amsterdam where he has worked until 2014. He has co-authored over 200 articles on research, guidelines and teaching, with currently 172 papers in PubMed, with an SCI H-index of 23, and a Google Scholar H-index of 31. He helped to secure several million euro in research support. He has advised 12 Ph.D. students and advised 13 more. He participates in guideline and policy committees on primary health care, and in several national longitudinal studies.
