European Summit on Age Related Diseases in Wroclaw (Poland)

The European Summit on Age Related Diseases was held on 11-13th September 2008 in Wroclaw, Poland. The Summit was among the most important scientific and political events under the French presidency, as the Ministers of Health of EU countries, EC deputies, representatives of geriatric, clinical and gerontology associations were invited. Three panels of experts assigned by European Scientific Associations worked on recommendations in the field of: basic research, health promotion and preventive actions, clinical care of the older persons.
The main goal of the Summit was to draw the European recommendations for future development of geriatric care through the improvement of education of professionals, development of interdisciplinary research, quality of geriatric care and long-term care assurance, implementation of health promotion programs and creation of strategy of support for family caregivers. All recommendations have been contained in the EUROPEAN SILVER PAPER ON THE FUTURE OF HEALTH PROMOTION AND PREVENTIVE ACTIONS, BASIC RESEARCH, AND CLINICAL ASPECTS OF AGE-RELATED DISEASE signed by all participants by acclamation.

The guidelines are going to be published in several scientific journals, disseminated among family doctors, geriatricians and specialists, presented to European Commission, Ministers of Health and Public Health in the European Union. The European Silver Paper should be treated as the voice of professionals caring for the older people to show to governments the direction to drive the health and social policy concerning the ageing societies.
